About the Event
Somewhere in the Night (1946)
Director: Joseph L. Mankiewicz
Starring: John Hodiak, Nancy Guild, Lloyd Nolan, John Ireland
USA / 110mins / PG
War veteran George Taylor (John Hodiak) finds himself suffering with amnesia. Helped by club singer Christy Smith (Nacy Guild) Taylor’s journey to recovery sharply turns into a journey involving lies, murder and deceit all set within the seedy criminal underworld of 1940s L.A.
Written and directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz (All Above Eve, Cleopatra) Somewhere in the Night’s is intertwined with the supernatural, psychological manipulation, comedy and even a large hoard of Nazi money! With cinematography by film noir regular Norbert Brodine (Kiss of Death, Thieves' Highway) and with an early film appearance by the great Richard Conte (The Big Combo, Cry of the City, The Godfather) the film is a forgotten gem from the 20th Century Fox back catalogue.
A manipulative film noir where not everything is quite what it seems for either the characters in the film or the audience watching it. A rare treat to see on the big screen.
Screening produced by Film Noir UK for Borderlines 2022. With thanks to Park Circus.
